Squeaking by on $300,000

Anyone suffering in this economy will do well to read how a banking executive barely squeaks by on $300,000 per year. The follwing story of despair will bring a tear to your weary eye ....

"Morning," says Laura Steins, 47, wearing a dark Armani suit.

  • as VP of MasterCard's corporate office she earns $150,000 per year
  • she receives $75,000 a year in child support from her ex-husband
  • an additional $50,000 from a personal investment
  • she lives in a 4,000-square-foot house on three acres
  • property taxes are $35,000 a year
  • live-in nanny is paid $40,000 per year
  • the gardener is $500 a month
  • a pool man
  • and someone to plow the snow from the quarter-mile-long driveway
  • Estimated cost-of-living: $8,000 to $10,000 a month

I wouldn't want her managing my money.
