Full statement: Bernie Madoff’s wife Ruth breaks silence
Never mind that Ruth Madoff worked for her husband for twenty years. Never mind that she knowingly transferred $15 million dollars into her personal accounts just two weeks before her husband was shackled by the Feds. Never mind that there isn't a wife in the world who isn't curious enough to learn (at least) the rudiments of her husband's business. Never mind that she is as guilty as sin and as complicit in his crimes as the blood that runs through her veins ... Ruth feels "betrayed and confused".
Like everyone else, I feel betrayed and confused. The man who committed this horrible fraud is not the man whom I have known for all these years.
Ruth's day in hell is coming fast and if justice is to be served, the entire Madoff clan should be rounded up and put in shackles. The money they stole still exists; hidden in off-shore accounts and invested in tangible goods and properties. Not one cent of their stolen fortune should be exempt from confiscation.
If justice is to be served, this "pariah" and the whole Madoff clan should be stripped of every last cent and thrown in jail alongside their patriarch.
In the end, to say that I feel devastated for the many whom my husband has destroyed is truly inadequate. Nothing I can say seems sufficient regarding the daily suffering that all those innocent people are enduring because of my husband. But if it matters to them at all, please know that not a day goes by when I don't ache over the stories that I have heard and read.
Sure you do Ruth. That nagging ache you feel isn't shame over your complicity in defrauding your friends out of billions of dollars ... The 500 pound gorilla on your back is actually the shame you feel for getting busted for your crimes.
The Rub
Despite the court ordering the Madoff's to forfeit $170 billion dollars, confiscating nearly all of the Madoff's properties and assets, and forcing Ruth to hand over her $80 million personal pocket-change fund, she will still be left with $2.5 million in cash.
Are you still sad that she didn't get to keep her beloved fur coat?
