Rich Lists Defended By Court

In a fantastic landmark decision pitting privacy against the public’s right to know, a Munich court ruled this week that the media have the right to publish the estimated fortunes of the super-rich.

[excerpt] April 11, 2011 - A German court on Thursday threw out a complaint by a wealthy man against Manager Magazine, which had published the man’s name and assets as part of an annual ranking that listed Germany’s richest people along with their estimated worth.

Judge Thomas Steiner rejected the complaint on the grounds that there is legitimate public interest in the assets of people who are worth more than €100 million, or even €1 billion, as well as the origins of their fortunes.

Huzzah!
