New IMF Chief Gets Probed By French Court

A 2008 arbitration deal that showered a controversial business tycoon with an astounding $400 million settlement is at the center of an investigation by a French court into newly appointed IMF Christine Lagarde's role in the misuse of public funds.

[AP] Investigators will open an inquiry this week into possible charges of “complicity to embezzlement of public funds” and “complicity to forgery,” prosecutors said.

[AP]  Lagarde was France’s finance minister when magnate Bernard Tapie won a 2008 settlement with a French state-owned bank over the mishandled sale of sportswear maker Adidas in the 1990s. Critics viewed the settlement as an overly generous chunk of taxpayer money handed to a brash businessman.

The odds that anything will come of this are next to nil.  But given the sheer amount of money involved, we have no doubt there is a conspiracy behind it all.
