Most galling of all perks could be ‘gross-ups’

As many Americans prepare to file their federal tax returns by Tuesday, some might dream of jobs where their employer pays part of their personal taxes. Such jobs do exist — in the corner office.

A USA TODAY review of proxy statements filed by more than 100 of the largest companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 shows a wide variety of perks and benefits that were showered on CEOs as part of their pay packages for 2006.

While the biggest perks tended to involve personal use of a corporate jet, another perk, the "tax gross-up," also appeared frequently.
