How America Fell To The Oligarchs
[Mother Jones] There is a war underway far from the bloody follies being fought by our young men in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a war being fought daily on the airwaves, on television and radio and over the Internet, a war of words and images, of half-truth, innuendo, and raging lies. It is a ideological war, a political war, pitting liberals against conservatives, Democrats against Republicans. It is a spending war, fueled by stealthy organizations and deep-pocketed anonymous donors. It's a war that's poised to topple what's left of American democracy.
The right wing won the opening salvo and will continue the onslaught when Michigan Republican Congressman Dave Camp takes over the House Ways and Means Committee, the committee charged with writing U.S. tax laws. Camp has, in no uncertain terms, promised the elite that their obscene tax breaks will remain in full effect. In fact, he wants to expand them.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the 2010 midterm elections saw nebulous organizations backing Republican candidates dispense $190 million, outspending Democrats by a more than two-to-one margin. Their investments in conservative candidates across the country paid off: the 62 House seats and six Senate seats won by Republicans were the most in the postwar era.
Our "democracy" is rapidly being dissembled by the vast amount of money drowning out what is left of our collective elected leader's integrity.
