GE’s $3.2 Billion Tax Repayment Hoax

Facing public outcry over the revelation that GE paid zero U.S. taxes on more than $14.2 billion in profits last year, the company has decided to donate its entire $3.2 billion tax return to the U.S. Treasury.

Or rather, that's what the Associated Press was reporting Wednesday morning.

Turns out it's a complete hoax.

Andrew Boyd, member of "The Yes Men," told news wire service Reuters that they were responsible for the hoax.

"This is unpatriotic, it's undemocratic, it's unfair," Boyd reportedly said, regarding GE's use of tax shelters. "It might be legal but it's immoral."

"The Yes Men" claim their stunts are aimed at encouraging major corporations to do the right things. If only it were that simple.
