CNET founder, Halsey Minor, owes California $13 million

Technology entrepreneur Halsey Minor has earned the dubious distinction of being named by California’s tax authorities as the state’s biggest tax delinquent.

A list published by the California Franchise Tax Board on Friday says Minor–the co-founder of Internet media site CNet Inc. and several other companies–and his wife, Shannon Minor, owe $13.1 million in personal income taxes to the state. That’s nearly $5 million more than the next biggest tax delinquent in the state.

Minor had a number of hits as a technology startup executive and investor, particularly before the first Internet bubble burst. But some later ventures did not go as well. A company he co-founded called 12 Entrepreneuring, styled as an incubator of other high-tech businesses, folded in 2001 after raising $130 million. The New York Post this month reported that Minor had been ordered by a judge to pay the auction house Sotheby’s $6.6 million after he reneged on bids for three paintings.
